Getting Started

Just open Ember and tap "Log Today" on the dashboard. Select your flow level (spotting, light, medium, or heavy) and you're done. You can also tap any past date on the calendar to retroactively log period days.

For the most accurate predictions, log at least 2-3 complete cycles. The more data Ember has, the better it can predict your next period.

No. Ember has no account system at all. There's nothing to sign up for, no email to enter, and no password to remember. Just download and start using it immediately. Your data is stored only on your device.

Ember requires iOS 17 or later. It works on iPhone and Apple Watch. To check your iOS version, go to Settings > General > About on your iPhone.

We're actively working on data import support. In the meantime, you can manually log past period dates on the calendar view to help Ember build an accurate prediction model. Tap any date and log it as a period day.

Privacy & Data

All your data is stored locally on your device in encrypted storage. We do not operate any servers that store user data. If you enable iCloud sync (Premium), your data is also stored in your personal iCloud account, which is encrypted end-to-end by Apple. We never have access to it.

Deleting the app removes all locally stored data from your device. If you had iCloud sync enabled, your data remains in your iCloud account and will restore when you reinstall the app.

We strongly recommend enabling iCloud sync or exporting your data (PDF/CSV) before deleting the app if you want to preserve your history.

Your data is protected by your device's security (passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID). Since we don't store your data on any server, there is nothing for us, hackers, law enforcement, or anyone else to access remotely. The only way someone could see your data is by having physical access to your unlocked device.

For extra protection, you can enable the in-app passcode/biometric lock in Ember's settings.

With Premium, go to Settings > Export Data. You can choose:

  • PDF Report: A formatted, easy-to-read report perfect for sharing with your doctor.
  • CSV Export: Raw data in spreadsheet format for your own analysis.

Both formats include your cycle history, symptom patterns, and any other tracked data. The export is generated on your device -- you choose where to share it via the iOS share sheet.

Go to Settings > Privacy > Delete All Data in the app. This permanently removes all your cycle data from your device. This action cannot be undone. If you have iCloud sync enabled, data will also be removed from iCloud.

Premium & Billing

Premium includes everything in the free version, plus:

  • 40+ symptom trackers (vs 12 in free)
  • BBT (basal body temperature) charting
  • Cervical mucus tracking
  • Fertility window and TTC (trying to conceive) mode
  • Health insights and correlations
  • Data export in PDF and CSV formats
  • Advanced charts and analytics
  • Phase-based education and tips
  • iCloud sync across devices

Premium is available in three options:

  • Monthly: $4.99/month
  • Yearly: $29.99/year ($2.50/month, save 50%)
  • Lifetime: $59.99 one-time (yours forever)

Prices may vary by region. All purchases are processed through the App Store.

To cancel your Ember Premium subscription:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  2. Tap your name at the top (Apple ID)
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Find Ember and tap it
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription

You'll keep Premium access until the end of your current billing period. All your logged data remains on your device regardless of subscription status.

Since subscriptions are handled by Apple, refund requests go through Apple as well. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the Ember purchase, and follow the steps to request a refund.

Yes. Open Ember on your new device, go to Settings > Premium, and tap "Restore Purchases." As long as you're signed in with the same Apple ID, your subscription or lifetime purchase will be restored automatically. If you had iCloud sync enabled, your data will also sync to the new device.

Features & Usage

Ember uses an on-device algorithm that analyzes your logged period data to predict future cycles. It considers your average cycle length, variations in cycle length, and period duration. After 2-3 cycles, predictions become quite accurate for most users. The algorithm runs entirely on your device -- no data is sent anywhere.

Important: Predictions are estimates and should not be used as a sole method of contraception.

To add an Ember widget to your home screen:

  1. Long-press on your iPhone home screen
  2. Tap the + button in the top-left corner
  3. Search for Ember
  4. Choose your preferred widget size (small, medium, or large)
  5. Tap Add Widget and position it where you'd like

Widgets update throughout the day to show your current cycle day, phase, and upcoming predictions.

The Ember Apple Watch app installs automatically when you have Ember on your iPhone and an Apple Watch paired. It lets you:

  • View your current cycle day and phase at a glance
  • Log your period start/end directly from your wrist
  • See upcoming period and ovulation predictions
  • Add a cycle complication to your watch face

Data syncs between your iPhone and Apple Watch automatically.

Ember is available in seven languages: English, German (Deutsch), Spanish (Espanol), French (Francais), Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese (Brasileiro). The app automatically uses your device's language setting. We're working on adding more languages.

Ember is currently iOS only. We're focused on making the best possible iOS experience before considering other platforms. This lets us take full advantage of iOS-specific technologies like SwiftData for encrypted local storage, WidgetKit for home screen widgets, and WatchKit for the Apple Watch companion app.

Common issues

Quick solutions for the most common problems.

Predictions seem off

Ember needs at least 2-3 logged cycles for accurate predictions. Make sure you're logging the start and end of each period. If your cycle is irregular, predictions will naturally have a wider range.

Widget not updating

  1. Open the Ember app (this refreshes widget data)
  2. If still stuck, remove the widget and re-add it
  3. Check that Background App Refresh is enabled for Ember in Settings

Apple Watch not syncing

  1. Make sure the Ember Watch app is installed (check the Watch app on your iPhone)
  2. Open Ember on your iPhone to trigger a sync
  3. Restart both your iPhone and Apple Watch

Premium not restoring

  1. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used for the original purchase
  2. Go to Settings > Premium > Restore Purchases in the app
  3. If the issue persists, sign out and back into your Apple ID, then try again

Notifications not working

  1. Go to iPhone Settings > Ember > Notifications
  2. Make sure Allow Notifications is enabled
  3. In the Ember app, check Settings to ensure your preferred reminders are turned on

App crashes or freezes

  1. Make sure you're running the latest version of Ember from the App Store
  2. Ensure your iPhone is on iOS 17 or later
  3. If the issue continues, email us at support@ember.cycle with your iOS version and a description of the issue
